Through the Energy and Water Conservation Program, SFPS has been engaged in sustainability practices since 2010. Over time, this important sustainability work has dramatically improved energy and water use efficiency at many district facilities, and the Program is now poised to make meaningful impacts across the district in the areas of operations, curriculum and career readiness, teacher professional development, and community partnerships.

Our focus on energy and water efficiency and conservation over the last eight years has allowed us to consistently decrease our utility budget expenditures, direct more funding to programs, staff, and students, and reduce our environmental footprint. Our work has really just begun…

Reduced water consumption by 43%;
Reduced natural gas consumption by 38%;
Reduced electricity consumption by 13%;
Installed 2.0 megawatts of Solar PV on 11 campuses;
Required recycling at every facility, with a current diversion rate 35%;
Reduced waste to landfill by 25%;
Instituted recycling/zero waste to landfill practices for electronics;
Developed food waste composting at 15 school facilities;
Built 2 geothermal schools, one rated LEED Gold;
Received Energy Star rating on 13 schools in 2017;
Conducted annual Energy Star assessments of each school;
Begun assessing every SFPS property for Solar PV capacity;
Built community partnerships in sustainability; and
Spending $500,000 less on utilities annually since year 2010/11
