EPA Energy Star Certification - Investments in Efficiency
SFPS has invested substantial resources towards building efficiency, with the goal of reducing energy and water use, and reducing overall operating expenses. Efficiency improvements to older facilities and designing/building new high-efficiency facilities has earned SFPS multiple awards, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star certification for 15 of our schools in 2014:
The EPA’s Energy Star program requires that applicants enter utility bill data and building information into Portfolio Manager, EPA's free online tool for measuring and tracking energy use, water use, and greenhouse gas emissions. In comparison to regionally and nationally benchmarked K–12 school energy usage, indoor air quality, thermal comfort, and lighting adequacy, SFPS’ Energy Star certified schools perform in the top quartile, or top 25% of K–12 schools in the nation. To maintain the Energy Star certification for these facilities, and to achieve certification for other district facilities, SFPS continually monitors and evaluates building performance measures.
