Addressing Social Emotional Needs

Addressing the Social Emotional Needs of Students, Staff and Families

Santa Fe Public Schools is committed to developing and supporting the wellness and mindfulness of students, staff and families. Our goals are to:

  • Foster meaningful connections with students,

  • Understand and respond to the challenges presented by trauma, stress, anxiety, and depression,

  • Utilize social-emotional learning to move our district toward equity and

  • Develop, practice and reflect on the attitudes, skills and knowledge for positive personal and social growth and academic and career success.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.  As a District, SFPS is implementing an adapted version of CASEL’s comprehensive district-wide SEL framework:

  • Build foundational support and plan
  • Strengthen adult SEL competencies and capacity
  • Promote SEL for students
  • Practice continuous improvement

Additionally, SFPS is dedicated to integrating SEL schoolwide, in an approach to integrate academic, social, and emotional learning across all school contexts. When fully implemented, schoolwide SEL contributes to more successful and equitable outcomes for young people, and is evidenced by the following indicators, more fully articulated in the CASEL Guide to Schoolwide SEL:

  • Explicit SEL Instruction
  • SEL Integrated Into Academic Instruction
  • Youth Voice and Engagement
  • Supportive School and Classroom Climates
  • Supportive Discipline
  • On-going Integrated Supports
  • Adult SEL
  • Family Partnerships
  • Community Partnerships
  • Systems for Continuous Improvement
