The state of New Mexico requires annual hearing and vision screenings for students in Pre-K, kindergarten, first and third grades. Other target populations for screening in New Mexico schools include new and transfer students who do not have a record of vision screening on file. Legislation passed in 2007 which created a fund to provide assistance for students without insurance to obtain a free comprehensive eye exam and glasses, if needed, when they do not pass the vision screening at school.

Screenings are typically scheduled in September and October. Check with your school for specific dates. If you do not wish to have your child screened, please notify your school nurse and principal in writing prior to September 1st.
