NFHS CEO Karissa Niehoff unveils the nationwide campaign entitled Bench Bad Behavior which is designed to end the out-of-control behavior by parents and other fans at high school sporting events. This unacceptable behavior is driving away men and women from serving as officials and threatening the future of high school sports in our country. Athlete of the Year is a prestigious honor recognizing athletes who have demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication, and sportsmanship in their respective disciplines. Their performance, impact on their sport, and work ethic does not go unnoticed!

SFH Female Athlete of the Year - Annalee Auer

Santa Fe High School

Annalee Auer lead by example by being a team leader not only in the classroom, but also on the cross country and track & field teams for 4 years. Alway looking for a challenge, Annalee was team captain for both teams for two years and also was the Meet Clerk at middle school track meets. She was also the Valedictorian, top 10%, and the Century Bank Super Scholar. Annalee will be attending Vanderbilt University.

SFH Male Athlete of the Year - Mateo Romero

Santa Fe High School

Mateo Griego was been a leader among fellow scholars at SFH. He was a valuable team member on both the football and track & field team. Mateo was a trusted team member and his natural ability to step into a leadership role was evident. His positive attitude was contagious and he shined academically with a 4.02 GPA, Honor Blues, and a 2 year senior mentor. Mateo will be attending the University of New Mexico to major in Psychology and Kinesiology.

Ricardo Martinez participated in football, powerlifting, and track & field. He made a significant impact on his teams, inspiring both peers and athletes. Ricardo's commitment to excellence and sportsmanship is evident in every performance, earning respect and admiration from fans and competitors alike. Ricardo stayed committed to his chosen sports while being a mentor to younger athletes. He will be attending the University of New Mexico.

Madelaine Portillo demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities while participating in volleyball, basketball, and track & field. She showed genuine empathy and a strong desire to support her teammates, going above and beyond her responsibilities to foster a harmonious team environment. She also received Sterling Silver for her academic achievements. Her dedication showed when she was chosen for the NMHSCA All-Star Red vs. Green basketball game. Madelaine will be attending the University of New Mexico.
