Annual Open Enrollment Information
Annual Open Enrollment runs from 10/1 through 11/30 and changes do not take effect until 1/1. This is the period when employees will be able to:
Add benefits not currently in place
Switch from High to Low Option/Low to High Option or change carrier
Cancel any benefits
New Hire
Adding a Qualifying Event can be done on the NMPSIA website, If you can not access your NMPSIA account you can fill out a Change Card and submit to SFPS with required documentation.
New Hire- You may enroll yourself and your eligible dependents within 31 days of your date of hire. Read here to enroll.
Long Term Disability and/or Additional Life Coverage can be purchased as a New Hire. If you choose not to enroll during your first 31 days of employment and wish to pick up the coverage later you will have to provide “Evidence of Good Health” with the possibility to be decline since the carrier sees it as a late entrance.
Change of Status Life Events
If an employee or dependent has a change of status due to one of the following qualifying life events, 31 days are allowed to report the change using a change card.
Documentation varies by Qualifying Event. Check the list for acceptable documentation.
Birth
Marriage
Adoption of a child or child placement order in anticipation of adoption
Incapacity of a child
Legal Guardianship of a child
Promotion with a salary increase to a new job classification; or employment status change from a part-time to full-time position
Divorce or Annulment (not a legal separation)
Involuntary loss of over coverage - proof of loss of coverage required
Loss (including retirement, resignation, or termination, etc.)
Establishment or termination of a domestic partnership
Death
Promotion to a new job classification with salary increase
Part-time to full-time employment with salary increase
