Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) and New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) have signed a "full-ride" agreement where qualifying students can graduate potentially debt-free upon completion of their degree track.

"This is an exciting opportunity for students to take their learning to the next level close to home and fully supported. Students who complete their degree track have the opportunity to be free of college debt as they enter their adult lives," said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez. "Imagine having up to four years of tuition, fees, room and board at a four-year university fully covered! That's the future that awaits our qualifying students under this agreement," he said.

“This partnership is in line with the NMHU vision to “help transform lives and communities”. It is great that we can provide access to an undergraduate education with little to no debt incurred by the student,” Theresa M. Law, JD, CFRE Vice President, Student and Donor Engagement for NMHU said. “The collaboration will show that we can do great things working together and is in the spirit of New Mexico values at their best,” she said.

This agreement is for current juniors and seniors who have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of their junior year and cannot have a suspension on their record within the academic year. Students with a suspension must request admission through a special admittance review by NMHU.

With work-study, Pell-eligible SFPS students will have up to four years of tuition, fees, room and board fully covered. In addition to the NMHU awards, students could potentially receive the NM Lottery Scholarship if the eligibility criteria is met.

By December 31st, students must apply to the NMHU Scholarship Foundation and complete a FAFSA application. NMHU will assist families with the application. The application process (housing, meal plan, orientation schedules, institutional aid applications, etc.) must also be completed by December 31st. School counselors, GEAR UP coordinator and College and Career Plaza staff will help assist students and families in answering questions.
