At Santa Fe Public Schools our goal is ensure that all  students are graduating high school prepared for college, career and life.  Our English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum is aligned to Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

The CCSS require that students learn about literature and other disciplines through reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Each section is divided into strands: K–5 and 6–12 ELA have Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language strands; the 6–12 history/social studies, science, and technical subjects section focuses on Reading and Writing.

In grades K-5 the standards require a 50/50 focus on literacy reading and information text. In grades 6-12, there is a much greater attention on the nonfiction, which is a shift from traditional standards.   In grades K-5 we are providing a solid foundation in reading acquisition.   These foundational skills are a necessary component to teaching students how to read accurately and efficiently.   This means no matter where your child is in the Santa Fe Public Schools, our teachers are all working off the same game plan, and that is to develop critical thinkers and problem solvers preparing them for the 21st century.
