Brooke Salazar, a junior at Capital High School and catcher/shortstop on the varsity softball team, was recently commended by an umpire for outstanding sportsmanship and leadership.
The official, Randall Schulz, was so impressed with Brooke’s leadership that he wrote a letter to New Mexico Athletic Association (NMAA) Commissioner of Officials, Zac Stevenson.
“Brooke’s enthusiasm and encouragement has not only uplifted her teammates but also created a positive atmosphere in the Capital dugout,” Schulz wrote. “Her unwavering optimism and ability to motivate others is truly commendable. Her commitment to her teammates and her willingness to learn from both successes and setbacks are exemplary traits that reflect her strong work ethic.”
Exceptional leadership, integrity, effective communication skills, maturity and respect for authority were also highlighted in Schulz’s letter.
“Brooke embodies the qualities of a true student athlete and leader,” said Schulz. “Brooke is an absolute joy to work with and is one of the many student athletes who makes officiating enjoyable for myself.”
Dennis Hernandez, Capital softball head coach, said he is pleased with the recognition Brooke received for her behavior and said she is an integral part of the Capital team.
“Brooke is an outstanding player with the heart of a champion,” said Hernandez. “She brings the energy and the can-do attitude it takes to be successful on the field. In a time where umpires are hard to find, it’s great to show them that there are kids out there that represent the best of what this game has to offer.”
Brook credits her positivity to her parents, her patience to her coaches and her love of the game to her teammates.
“It was nice because I’ve never gotten a big compliment like that, especially in a letter to the NMAA,” said Brooke. “I’m a good leader and a positive asset to my team. This recognition really shows how hard I’ve been working at that.”
