The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) has published the latest school ratings on New Mexico VISTAS, revealing notable progress across the Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) district. All eight SFPS schools previously marked as needing improvement have now been upgraded to "traditional" status.
This year’s ratings, while primarily based on test scores, incorporate updated methods, including a significant shift in calculating student growth for grades 3rd-8th. The focus has moved toward tracking the growth of individual students rather than comparing year-over-year proficiency rates across entire schools. All SFPS schools now have a designation of "traditional" or "spotlight.”
"We are extremely proud that the hard work of our educators and students is being recognized by the state," said Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez. "We believe this is only the beginning. Our goal is to build on this momentum and continue improving student outcomes. We won’t rest here."
Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Vanessa Romero added, "We are thrilled with the progress we’re seeing. The combined efforts in implementing Standards-Based Instruction, offering free summer programming, achieving state-leading results in reducing chronic absenteeism, and the dedication of our staff are yielding positive results."
Beata Thorstensen, Chief of Assessment and Accountability, commented, “NMPED has made a concerted effort to partner with school districts to enhance both the methods and accuracy of data in school ratings.”
SFPS congratulates its staff, students, families, and our board of education for being resolute in their efforts to improve outcomes. Together, we are committed to continuing this progress and making a positive impact.
