The SFPS Board of Education on June 28th opened the application window for candidates seeking to fill the District 4 vacancy following Vice President Rudy Garcia’s resignation on June 20th. The application window closes at noon on July 18th.
The application, process for filling the vacancy, relevant SFPS board policies and District 4 boundaries are posted on SFPS’ website at https://www.sfps.info/ under the “Board of Ed Application” button.
“The SFPS Board of Education looks forward to hearing from those interested and eager to represent District 4 on Santa Fe’s south side. This open process will include public feedback on the candidates and open interviews on July 26th. A new Board member for District 4 will be voted in before students head back to school and Board meetings resume in August,” said Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez.
The District 4 Board member currently represents Capital High School, Cesar Chavez Community School, Ortiz Middle School, Nye Early Childhood Center, Ramirez Thomas Elementary School, Nina Otero Community School and Sweeney Elementary School. The district is bounded by I-25, Richards Avenue, Rodeo Road, Lopez Lane, Agua Fria Street, Jemez Road, Airport Road/State Route 284 and the Santa Fe River on Santa Fe’s south side.
Applicants must complete an application and provide a letter of interest, resume and certified documentation of voter registration or voter card as proof of residency. Applications may be emailed to abejar@sfps.k12.nm.us or delivered to the SFPS Educational Services Center at 610 Alta Vista.
As required by the state, the board has 45 days to fill a vacancy. The board will hold a special community meeting to hear public comment on candidates and conduct candidate interviews on Tuesday, July 26th at 5:00 p.m. in the SFPS boardroom, located at 610 Alta Vista. The Board will vote on the candidate on July 26th or Tuesday, August 2nd. Once approved, the appointee’s term will begin immediately, with a swearing-in ceremony to follow.
