Pinon Elementary showed off its new Buddy Bench this morning! A buddy bench is a way for students can sit if they are feeling lonely or are in need of a friend. If you see someone another student sitting on the bench, other students are encouraged to approach and invite the student to join them! The buddy bench helps students combat feelings of isolation, promote kindness and encourage children to be inclusive and empathetic towards their peers! Great job, Eagles!

Congratulations to Fine Arts Coordinator Cristina Gonzales for having her piece, Apapachando la Matria, in the New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary, located in the Santa Fe Railyard! According to the New Mexico Museum of Art, "the vision for Vladem Contemporary is to serve as a vibrant cultural resource for New Mexicans and as a national and international destination for contemporary art." Her piece, which is located in the Windowbox Installation space, depicts five generations of women in González’ matrilineal family line. Derived from the Nahuatl word papatzoa, apapachar is to hold with tenderness or “to caress with the soul.” La matria refers to a motherland of the rematriated self. In Apapachando la Matria, González holds with tenderness her own ancestral line, and offers a space of healing for displaced Chicanas who seek reconnection to their own motherland—both interior and otherwise. The work contains layers of images: cut, painted, drawn, and reflected, with shadows activating the space throughout. The walls and ground are clothed in amate, the Pre-Hispanic bark paper upon which the ancient codices of the Americas were written. https://www.nmartmuseum.org/cristina-gonzalez/
