Last Friday, we held our first district-wide Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Day! While the Office of Student Wellness has been focusing on SEL for years, these efforts increased since the pandemic. SEL Day was an initiative that began last winter at Capital High School in collaboration with Communities in Schools.
Students participated in a variety of activities across the district, such as yoga, gardening, scribbling and art, movement and dance, and much more! These activities help students and staff develop healthy identities, manage emotions, feel and show empathy and make responsible and caring decisions.
SEL builds social and emotional skills that increase student engagement and has been proven to improve academic performance. Participating in SEL programs has been linked to decreased emotional stress, better relationships with teachers and stronger feelings of belonging and inclusiveness in schools.
